WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State senior guard Fred VanVleet and senior guard Ron Baker sat in the Koch Arena interview room and described a scene from the forgotten past.

The 25th-ranked Shockers lost a home game for the first time since 2013, a game that seemed monumental before the rush of a trip to the Final Four buried that feeling.

On Saturday, the Shockers had that sinking feeling again after watching an opponent celebrate on its home court for the first time in two-plus seasons.

Northern Iowa knocked off Wichita State 53-50 on Saturday to end the nation's longest home win streak at 43 games. The Shockers knew exactly what went wrong after missing 46 shots, 26 3-pointers and ending the game on a 2-for-17 slide.

"You've got to make them," VanVleet said. "It's as simple as that. The majority of shots we're getting are pretty good looks."

WSU (18-7, 12-2 Missouri Valley Conference) remains in control of the conference race and needs two wins to clinch at least a tie for its third straight title. Northern Iowa (16-11, 8-6) won its sixth straight game by mixing defenses and giving the Shockers little offense outside of guarded jump shots.

"We've just got a difference confidence about us now," UNI coach Ben Jacobson said. "It's helped us in rebounding, it's helped with our toughness."

Baker and sophomore guard Conner Frankamp both missed 3-pointers in the final six seconds.

The Shockers matched UNI with 20 field goals and took 18 more shots. They outrebounded UNI 48-27 and grabbed 20 offensive rebounds. That all went to waste because of a miserable shooting performance, 30.3 percent overall and 22.6 percent from 3-point range.

Baker scored 12 points, all in the first half, and VanVleet added eight. With Frankamp, WSU's top shooters combined to go 5-for-36 from the field.

"We've got to execute better and I've got to put them in positions to get better looks," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. "You've got give them credit with a great defensive game plan."

The Panthers held WSU scoreless for 7:42 in the second half, allowing them to build a 51-44 lead.

The Shockers tied the game 44-44 with a 17-4 run and then failed to take the lead on seven straight possessions.

"We stuck together," Panthers guard Matt Bohannon said. "Tough environment. You've got 10,000-plus fans screaming at you. We fought really hard and proved to ourselves just how good we can be."

UNI sophomore guard Wyatt Lohaus broke the drought with a jumper with 6:58 to play and started a decisive 7-0 run for the Panthers.

Wichita State ended the first half missing 13 of 15 shots and trailed 38-27 at halftime, its first deficit since November in an 84-61 loss to Iowa.

The Shockers made 11 of 31 shots, 3 of 15 from 3-point range. Northern Iowa mixed up zone and man defenses. Wichita State missed open shots, guarded shots and missed two in the lane.

Northern Iowa sophomore forward Klint Carlson came off the bench to score 10 points, eight in a burst near the end of the half. The Panthers led 28-27 when Carlson started a run with a three-point play. He drove for a layup and a 35-27 lead. His 3-pointer made it 38-27.

The Shockers and Panthers traded leads in the first half. Neither could establish a defensive hold.

Wichita State led 12-8 and the crowd stood. A 3-pointer by Bohannon quieted the roar. A three-point play by Lohaus cut into a four-point lead.

The Panthers led 26-23 and Shockers sophomore center Shaq Morris made a 15-foot jumper. Baker's follow shot gave the Shockers a 27-26 lead.

NOTES: Northern Iowa is 4-3 against Wichita State when the Shockers are ranked, including a 2006 win over No. 16 WSU at Koch Arena. ...
