No. 7 Michigan State 59, Iowa 56: Adreian Payne had 18 points and 10 rebounds and the Spartans rallied to knock off the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten quarterfinals in Chicago.
Keith Appling and Gary Harris added 13 points apiece for third-seeded Michigan State (25-7), which faces second-seeded Ohio State in Saturday’s semifinals. The Spartans trailed by 12 with 10:24 left before taking control with a 22-2 run.
Mike Gesell had nine points to lead sixth-seeded Iowa (21-12). The Hawkeyes had a chance to force overtime but Roy Devyn Marble missed a tying 3-point attempt in the final seconds.
The Hawkeyes led 47-35 before collapsing and Michigan State took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Harris to make it 50-49 with 4:10 to play. Payne’s basket with 1:54 left pushed the lead to eight before Iowa made one last run.
Iowa jumped out to a 9-2 lead and led the entire first half. Michigan State was just 8-of-30 shooting and trailed 30-20 at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan State also rallied from a 12-point deficit to win the regular-season meeting. … Iowa matched a season-worst with 19 turnovers. … Appling passed Earvin “Magic” Johnson (1,059 points, 1977-79) and Johnny Green (1,062) to move into 39th on Michigan State’s career scoring list. He has 1,069 points.
