Akron 85, Penn State 60: Zeke Marshall scored a season-high 17 points as the Zips routed the Nittany Lions, who lost star Tim Frazier to an injury, in the fifth-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.
Frazier suffered what was reported to be an Achilles' injury early in the first half and did not return. D.J. Newbill kept Penn State (2-2) afloat with 14 first-half points as the Nittany Lions went into the break with a 36-32 advantage.
However, the absence of Frazier really showed in the second half. Penn State shot only 25 percent after the intermission without its floor general and the Zips took advantage with a 31-8 run to open the second half, keyed by nine points from Marshall.
Marshall shot 11-of-15 from the foul line to go along with seven rebounds and six blocks while Brian Walsh and Jake Kretzer chipped in with 11 points apiece for Akron (3-2), which shot a torrid 68 percent from the field during a 53-point second half to turn a four-point halftime deficit into an easy victory.
Newbill, who filled in at point guard in Frazier’s absence, finished with a career-high 20 points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Frazier was the only player in Division I to average 17 points and six assists a season ago. … Marshall set career highs in free throw makes and attempts while recording his third game with five or more blocks this season. … Penn State sophomore Ross Travis posted his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
