Burke scored 17 points to
lead four players in double figures as the Wolverines edged the Panthers
in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.
After a quiet first half, Glenn
Robinson III scored nine of his 13 points in the final 11:25 and the Wolverines (4-0)
rallied from a four-point halftime deficit. Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16 points, and Nik Stauskas added 15.
Robinson’s jumper with 7:07 left capped
a 9-0 run and put Michigan ahead 48-44, and the Wolverines never trailed again.
Pittsburgh (4-1) pulled within three on James Robinson’s basket with 13 seconds
left, but the Wolverines hit four free throws to secure the win.
Lamar Patterson led Pittsburgh with 14 points, while Cameron Wright and Robinson scored eight apiece. The Panthers were outrebounded 32-19
after dominating the boards in their first four games.
Michigan, which entered the game
shooting an NCAA-best 53.1 percent from 3-point range, won despite shooting
3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Wolverines will face Kansas State
in Friday’s championship game, following the third-place game between
Pittsburgh and Delaware at 2:30 p.m. ET.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan improved
to 12-6 all-time against Pittsburgh. … Pittsburgh lost for only the fourth time
in its last 14 games against Big Ten opponents. …Jordan
