Virginia Tech 66, Wake Forest 65: Erick Green scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half and Robert Brown’s basket with 12.3 seconds remaining gave the Hokies a victory over the visiting Demon Deacons.
Travis McKie scored 20 points for Wake Forest (9-8, 2-3 ACC), including a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left that gave the Deacons a 65-64 lead. After Brown's go-ahead layup, C.J. Harris missed a driving layup and Tyler Cavanaugh could not tip in the rebound at the buzzer for Wake.
Jarell Eddie had 18 points for Virginia Tech (11-6, 2-2), including a 3-pointer that tied the game at 62 with 1:39 to go. Marquis Rankin gave the Hokies the lead before McKie’s go-ahead basket.
Devin Thomas recorded 12 points and eight rebounds for Wake Forest. McKie had a game-high 15 boards and Harris finished with 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting.
McKie had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half, during which Wake Forest led by as many as eight before settling for a 37-31 lead at intermission. Green, the nation’s leading scorer, was 1-of-8 from the field in the opening 20 minutes while Eddie stepped up to record 15 first-half points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia Tech, which led the ACC in free-throw shooting coming in, was only 8-of-16 from the line. … Wake Forest had 18 fast-break points after having none in its last game against Clemson. … Cadarian Raines added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Hokies.
