Marquette 82, Connecticut 76 (OT): Junior Cadougan scored 18 points, including a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, and the Golden Eagles edged the visiting Huskies in the Big East opener for both teams.

Cadougan had three points in the extra period, including a free throw that put Marquette (10-3) up 77-74 with 33 seconds left. After Connecticut’s Shabazz Napier missed a 3-pointer, the Golden Eagles went 5-of-6 from the free throw line to seal it.

Napier matched his career high with 29 points and Ryan Boatright added 16 for the Huskies (10-3), who saw their four-game winning streak end. Davante Gardner scored 18, including 10-of-10 at the free-throw line, and Vander Blue added 13 for Marquette, which was only 2-of-16 from 3-point range.

Boatright’s jumper put the Huskies ahead 69-66 with six seconds left in regulation before Cadougan drained the tying shot from deep on the right wing. Marquette, which won its 17th straight home game, led by as many as 10 in the second half.

Gardner scored 12 points in the first half to help Marquette push its lead to as much as six before settling for a 30-27 advantage at intermission. Napier led the way with 10 points for the Huskies, who gave up 10 offensive rebounds and 16 points in the paint during the opening 20 minutes.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Assistant Brad Autry subbed for Marquette coach Buzz Williams, who was suspended one game because of school-imposed sanctions for recruiting violations committed by former assistant Scott Monarch. … It was the first time in six games that the home team won in the series.
