St. John's 57, NJIT 49: D'Angelo Harrison scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and the host Red Storm withstood a fierce challenge from the Highlanders.
JaKarr Sampson reached double figures for the sixth straight game and also collected his first career double-double by contributing 15 points and 17 rebounds. Chris Obekpa added eight points, including six straight during St. John's (6-2) game-ending 10-2 run.
Ryan Woods led NJIT (4-3) with 16 points. Leading scorer Chris Flores added 10 for the Highlanders, which shot 32.2 percent, committed 15 turnovers and went scoreless in the final 3:53.
The Red Storm won despite shooting 36.7 percent and a horrendous 11-of-29 from the foul line. They sputtered in the first half and entered the break behind 35-23 before rallying with seven straight points from Harrison and an 11-0 run that brought them to within 38-36 five minutes into the second half.
St. John's took the lead for good when Harrison hit a free throw with 5:20 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John's tied a season high with 12 blocked shots, one short of the school record. ... NJIT fell to 0-3 against St. John's and 0-13 all-time against Big East opponents. ... Harrison has scored 67 points in his last three games.
