Stanford 92, Illinois State 88 (OT): Aaron Bright scored four of his career-high 29 points in overtime and Stanford rallied to beat visiting Illinois State in the quarterfinals of the NIT.
Bright made six of his seven 3-point attempts for third-seeded Stanford (23-11), which will host No. 5 seed Nevada in the NIT semifinals Wednesday.
The seventh-seeded Redbirds (21-14) shot 60 percent in the first half and led 36-33 at halftime after making eight of their first 11 3-pointers.
Playing its third straight overtime game, Illinois State was led by Nic Moore’s 25 points. Tyler Brown added 23 points and Jackie Carmichael had 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Trailing 71-60 with eight minutes left, Stanford responded with a 14-3 run as Bright scored nine points during the stretch, including back-to-back 3-pointers.
The teams headed to overtime after Chasson Randle missed an open 3-point shot at the buzzer that would have given Stanford the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford’s Josh Owens became the 40th player in school history to score 1,000 career points in the first half…One game after shooting a school-record 17 of 23 from 3-point range at Mississippi, the Redbirds were 15 of 30 (50 percent) against Stanford….Stanford is trying to become the fourth team to play at the Madison Square Garden in both the Preseason and Postseason NIT in the same season…The win was Stanford’s 1,400th in the program’s 97-year history.
