North Carolina State 67, Virginia 64: C.J. Leslie was unstoppable inside, getting 19 points and 14 rebounds, as the Wolfpack held off the Cavaliers and staked a claim to a likely NCAA tournament bid.
Behind Leslie, who hit 9 of 11 shots, fifth-seeded NC State (22-11) advanced to face top-seeded North Carolina in Saturday’s ACC semifinals. The Pack also avenged a one-point loss to Virginia in the regular season.
Virginia (22-9) had only seven scholarship players due to injury and suspension, but the Cavs are expected to receive an NCAA bid.
The Wolfpack led 36-33 at the half, thanks to Scott Wood’s four-point play with one second left. NC State built the lead to nine, but the Cavs rallied behind senior forward Mike Scott (23 points, 11 rebounds).
UVA guard Joe Harris missed a tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.
Game Notebook: Wood, who had hit 13 of 26 3-pointers entering the game, went 2 of 6 from beyond the arc. … The Pack improved to 5-3 in ACC tourney games played in Atlanta. … The Cavs got zero points from their depleted bench.
