Zane Johnson scored a season-high 27 points to lead host Hawaii to a 75-68 victory over Clemson in the fifth-place game at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.
Johnson did much of his damage from outside, hitting six of 12 3-point attempts while going 8-for-14 overall from the field. The Rainbow Warriors (7-5) shot 49 percent (26-for-53) as a team and finished with a 37-29 advantage on the boards against the Tigers, who came into the game ranked among the national leaders in rebounding margin.
Trailing by three at halftime, Hawaii scored the first nine points of the second half to take the lead for good, 40-34, with 16:52 to go. Clemson got back within one on a 3-pointer by Andre Young, but Johnson answered from behind the arc just 22 seconds later, and the Tigers (7-6) never got closer than four again.
Vander Joaquim finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors. Young led Clemson with 14 points, while Devin Booker added 13 points and seven rebounds in defeat.
