Tony Snell scored a career-high 21 points as New Mexico opened with a 13-2 run and held off Washington State 72-62 in the consolation round of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday.
Kendall Williams scored 17 points for the Lobos (3-2), including five points during the early run. Twelve of Snell's points came on 3-pointers.
The Lobos led by as many as 17 in the first half before the Cougars (2-3) cut the deficit to 36-27 at halftime. In the second half, Washington State got as close as 64-57 on Brock Motum’s layup with 2:16 left.
Faisal Aden led Washington State with 25 points, hitting 3-of-6 3-point attempts.
New Mexico meets Boston College in the fifth-place game Saturday. Boston College (2-3) beat UC Riverside 66-62 earlier Friday. Washington State faces UC Riverside (1-4) for seventh place Saturday.
