BAYLOR 79, IOWA STATE 64: Perry Jones III broke out of a scoring slump with 18 points, and No. 10 Baylor snapped a two-game skid with a home win over Iowa State.
Jones III, who totaled just nine points combined in Baylor’s back-to-back losses last week, had 10 points by halftime to help give the Bears (22-4, 9-4 Big 12) a 31-24 edge.
Baylor routinely found easy shots inside against the undersized Cyclones (18-8, 8-5 Big 12), much of them from Jones III and freshman Quincy Miller, who finished with 16 points and six assists.
While Iowa State tried to peck away at the lead with contested 3-point jumpers, the Bears always had an answer in the form of a dunk or wide-open layup. Baylor finished with 24 assists on 33 field goals and shot 60 percent from the field.
After the Cyclones pulled within six on a couple of occasions in the second half, Baylor pushed the lead back to 58-46 on Jones III’s driving layup with about nine minutes to go. Later, Pierre Jackson hit Quincy Acy with a nice dish inside for a dunk that made it 70-55 with 3:20 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Melvin Ejim, who led Iowa State with 17 points, scored seven straight at one point in the second half to trim Baylor’s lead to 44-39 with 13:57 left … Iowa State is still 1 1/2 games up on Kansas State and Texas for fourth place in the conference … Baylor’s senior class of Acy, Fred Ellis and Anthony Jones recorded their 92nd win, the most for any class in school history.
