TEXAS 75, KANSAS STATE 64: J’Covan Brown had 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as host Texas erased a 14-point deficit to defeat Kansas State.
Alexis Wangmene finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Myck Kabongo added 12 for the Longhorns (16-9, 6-6 Big 12), who earned their third straight victory. More importantly, Texas moved into a tie for fifth with the Wildcats (17-7, 6-6 Big 12) in the conference standings.
The Longhorns are in jeopardy of missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
Kansas State led 44-30 after Adrian Diaz’s layup with 18:02 left. But the Longhorns, behind Brown and Kabongo, used a 28-10 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 58-54 lead with 7:03 left.
From there, Texas stretched the lead to as many as 12, getting most of its points at the free-throw line. The Longhorns attempted 48 free throws — the Wildcats had just 12 attempts, by comparison — and converted 35 of them.
Angel Rodriguez had a team-high 15 points for Kansas State, which entered with a two-game win streak. Rodney McGruder, who scored a career-high 33 points in Kansas State’s 84-80 victory over Texas on Jan. 18, finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Will Spradling and Diaz each had 11 for the Wildcats, whose three-game win streak in Austin came to an end.
The Longhorns, who trailed 40-27 at the half, improved to 14-2 at home. Their next three games, however, are all against top-10 teams: No. 10 Kansas, No. 6 Baylor and fourth-ranked Missouri.
GAME NOTEBOOK: K-State fell to 13-10 in the all-time series … The win was Texas’ first at home over the Wildcats since Feb. 12, 2005 … Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of Texas’ last five games … Thirteen of the Longhorns’ last 15 points came from the free-throw line … Total fouls: K-State 33, Texas 16.
