Vanderbilt parlayed a 3-point shooting outburst in the second half into a 67-57 victory over South Carolina Tuesday night at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C, giving coach Kevin Stallings a victory in his 400th game as Commodores coach.
Final margin aside, the Commodores dominated the majority of the game. Vandy led 22-12 at the end of an ugly first half, then made five 3-pointers early in the second half to lead 46-25 with 13:35 remaining.
Vanderbilt (12-4, 2-0 SEC) has held its first two conference foes, Auburn and South Carolina, to 92 total points. The Commodores blew out Auburn 65-35 on Saturday.
John Jenkins scored 14 points, and hit four shots from beyond the arc to lead a Vandy team that shot 13 of 22 from 3-point range as a group. Brad Tinsley added 13 points and Jeffery Taylor 11. Star center Festus Ezeli was in foul trouble all night and mustered just two points.
South Carolina (8-8, 0-2 SEC) lost its first two conference games for the first time during Darrin Horn’s tenure as coach. The Gamecocks got 16 points from Bruce Ellington and 11 from Damontre Harri. But leading scorer Malik Cooke was held to nine points -- all in the last 10 minutes of the game.
