Mike Scott recorded 23 points and eight rebounds and No. 23 Virginia held off a second-half rally by visiting Miami for a 52-51 victory in the ACC opener for both on Saturday.
Miami took a 46-45 lead on a dunk by Kenny Kadji with 4:04 remaining, but Virginia answered with a 3-pointer by Sammy Zeglinski and a runner by Jontel Evans.
The Cavaliers never trailed again, but had to survive as Miami’s Durand Scott missed a twisting layup in the final seconds.
Akil Mitchell added seven rebounds for Virginia (14-1), which won its 12th straight game for the first time since 1981-82. The Cavaliers have held all but one opponent to 58 points or less.
Kadji finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Durand Scott had 12 points – all in the second half – for Miami (9-5), which had its four-game win streak snapped.
Malcolm Grant (eight points) made a 3-pointer for the 35th straight game, tying the Hurricanes’ school record set by Jack McClinton.
Miami led 10-4 early on, but Virginia seized control with its defense and edged away to a 26-17 halftime lead. Virginia held the Hurricanes to 6-of-25 from the field and one assist in the opening 20 minutes. Mike Scott had 12 points in the first half.
