Freshman Anthony Collins converted a three-point play with 12.7 seconds
left to give South Florida a 67-65 victory over visiting Rutgers on
Sunday.
Collins, who had seven points and a career-high 10 assists, drove into
the teeth of the Rutgers defense to make a twisting layup, was fouled
and made the free throw. The Bulls (8-7, 1-1 Big East) caused an
off-balance shot from Eli Carter at the buzzer that missed.
Ron Anderson Jr. had 15 points, Hugh Robertson 12 and Augustus Gilchrist
added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Bulls, which improved to 8-1
at home
Carter had 23 points and Myles Mack added 14, including a jumper with
17.9 seconds remaining to give Rutgers (8-6, 0-1) a 65-64 lead. The
Scarlet Knights dropped to 2-15 in Big East openers, including six
straight losses.
Rutgers missed its first seven shots, but was tied 20-20 before South
Florida finished with a 9-2 run for a 29-22 halftime lead. Gilchrist had
eight points and six rebounds, while Collins added four points and five
assists for the Bulls in the first half.
South Florida has held its last 11 opponents to 30 points or less in the
opening 20 minutes. Carter was 2-for-9, scoring five points.
