Eli Carter scored a career-high 31 points and host Rutgers upset No. 10 Florida 85-83 in double overtime Thursday.
The Scarlet Knights (8-5) led for only 52 seconds of regulation, but closed the second half with a 9-2 run to forge a 66-66 tie with the Gators (10-3), whose five-game winning streak ended.
Carter’s basket with 1:46 to go in double overtime gave Rutgers an 82-78 lead. Florida answered with Brandon Beal’s 3-pointer 25 seconds later to cut Rutgers' lead to one.
Myles Mack, who missed a fadeaway jumper at the end of regulation, hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it 85-81 Rutgers with 58 seconds remaining.
Florida pulled within 85-83 on Erving Walker’s basket, and Florida forced a shot-clock violation to get the ball back with 8.7 seconds to go, but Walker’s jumper hit off the back iron at the buzzer.
In the first overtime, Florida led 76-73 after two Patric Young free throws with 31.8 seconds to go before Carter hit a 3-pointer with 18.2 seconds left to tie it at 76.
Florida looked to be in good shape with a 10-2 run late in the second half with Kenny Boynton’s three-point play putting the Gators ahead 64-57 with 2:49 remaining.
Boynton led Florida with 26 points. Former Rutgers standout Mike Rosario, who played two years for the Scarlet Knights before transferring to Florida, scored five points for the Gators.
