Gerald Robinson scored 20 points, and Georgia opened the second half on a 16-3 run to down visiting Mercer 72-58 Tuesday.
The Bulldogs were tied 30-30 at halftime against their Atlantic Sun opponent, and leading scorer Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was scoreless. But Georgia took control to start the second half and moved to 6-5.
A freshman who came in averaging 14.2 points, Caldwell-Pope scored his first point on a free throw 27 seconds into the half. He scored four minutes later on a tip-in, and capped the run with a fast-break dunk with 13:37 left to give the Bulldogs a 46-33 advantage.
Perhaps starting slow after returning home from the West Coast, where Georgia beat USC on Saturday, the Bulldogs fell behind 16-8 midway through the first half. But a 10-2 spurt pulled the Bulldogs even at 18 on Vincent Williams’ layup with 6:40 to go before halftime.
Williams finished with 11 points for Georgia. Connor Nolte came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers, also finishing with 11 points. Caldwell-Pope had a season-low eight, the first time he’s failed to score in double figures.
Langston Hall led the Bears (7-5) with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
