Vincent Council led the way with 21 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds and two blocks as host Providence dominated cross-town rival Brown 80-49 on Monday.
Freshman LaDontae Henton added 19 points and nine boards, and Bryce Cotton scored 19 points for the Friars (7-2), who have won three straight and host former Big East rival Boston College on Thursday.
Providence, which had one of the worst defensive teams in the country under coach Keno Davis last season, has tightened up on that end considerably under the direction of first-year coach Ed Cooley. The Friars limited the Bears to 29 percent shooting Monday, including 7-of-23 from beyond the arc.
Providence made its move early, jumping out to a 15-2 lead in the first half as Council knocked down his first three jumpers and Henton worked for a pair of easy layups.
The Friars would take a 34-19 lead into the break and never let the lead slip to single digits. A 27-2 run midway through the second half featured five 3-pointers and spread the lead to 80-39 before the Friars took their foot off the gas.
Andrew McCarthy collected 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Brown (4-6).
