Durand Scott and Malcolm Grant each scored 19 points as Miami (FL) built a big lead and held on for a 72-57 victory over visiting Rutgers on Tuesday.
Kenny Kadji added 13 points for the Hurricanes, who improved to 2-0 for first-year coach Jim Larranaga.
Rutgers (1-1), who played five freshmen, trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before battling back to within 48-42 with 9:29 remaining. Miami never let the Knights get closer. Austin Carroll led Rutgers with 11 points.
The Hurricanes quickly built a 10-point lead in the first half and led by as many 29-13 after Grant hit his third straight 3-pointer with 6:36 left. Grant finished with 11 in the first 20 minutes as Miami settled for a 35-25 halftime advantage. The Hurricanes made 7-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half.
Freshman point guard Shane Larkin was cleared to play by the NCAA Tuesday and drained a 3-pointer with his first shot for Miami. Larkin, the son of Cincinnati Reds all-star shortstop Barry Larkin, initially signed and attended summer school at DePaul. After transferring to Miami, he needed an NCAA waiver to be eligible.
