Durand Scott had 15 points and five assists, and Malcolm Grant added 14 as Miami came from nine points down in the second half to defeat visiting Tennessee Tech 69-58 on Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Rion Brown’s 3-pointer with 4:26 left gave the Hurricanes the lead for good 55-54, giving coach Jim Larranaga a win in his Miami debut. Trey McKinney Jones chipped in with 12 points, including two key 3-pointers late in the second half.
Zac Swansey had 14 of his team-high 19 points in the first half for Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles shook off an early 10-0 deficit and finished the first half with a 16-3 run for a 32-27 halftime lead.
Tech, which lost to Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game last season, led 45-36 with 11:49 left.
The Golden Eagles are now 0-4 against Miami and 3-15 against ACC schools.
Swingman DeQuan Jones will miss the entire season while Miami and the NCAA investigate a potential violation involving the Nevin Shapiro scandal.
