Johnathan Loyd established career-highs with 24 points and six 3-point baskets to lead Oregon to a 64-59 victory over visiting Texas-El Paso on Tuesday.
The sophomore guard was 1-for-4 from 3-point range entering the contest before his breakout effort lifted the Ducks (4-1) to their fourth straight victory.
Loyd was 8-of-11 from the field and 6-of-7 from behind the arc to help send the Miners (1-4) to their third straight defeat.
Michael Perez scored a career-high 18 points for UTEP. Perez, who was 8-of-12 shooting, didn’t score more than five points in any of UTEP’s first four games. John Bohannon added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Miners.
Perez pulled the Miners within 56-55 on a three-point play with 1:35 left but missed a game-tying 3-point attempt with 14 seconds left.
Oregon’s Garrett Sim hit two free throws with nine seconds left for the final margin.
Olu Ashaolu added 13 points for the Ducks.
It was 23-23 at halftime before Oregon opened the second half with a 12-3 run. Loyd hit two 3s during the spurt and E.J. Singler hit one.
The Ducks led 40-34 after Carlos Emory’s 3-pointer with 12:24 to play, but UTEP pulled within 46-44 on Perez’s layup with 7:05 to play.
