Elston Turner scored 14 points, and No. 24 Texas A&M survived a second-half scare from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 56-43 home victory on Saturday.
Ray Turner added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Aggies (4-1), who won their 63rd consecutive non-conference game at Reed Arena.
Myron Dempsey had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Islanders (1-3), who scored only 16 first-half points on 20 percent shooting from the field.
Texas A&M led 30-16 at the break and by as many 20 early in the second half, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to make things interesting.
The Islanders came into the game shooting only 15 percent from 3-point range and missed their first 12 from behind the arc. But consecutive 3-pointers by Hameed Ali, Johnathan Jordan and Jake Kocher were a key part of a 12-0 run in the middle of the second half that cut Texas A&M’s lead to 45-39 with 7:45 left.
The Aggies, though, eventually stretched their lead back to double digits, going up 52-40 on a Ray Turner jumper.
This was the first of five consecutive home games for the Aggies before they travel to face Florida on Dec. 17.
