Vanderbilt avoided another letdown loss to a mid-major opponent, enjoying an impressive offensive performance in a 95-73 victory over visiting Monmouth on Friday.
The No. 22 Commodores (5-1) posted their fourth straight victory and ruined the return to Nashville for King Rice, a former Vanderbilt assistant in his first season as Monmouth coach.
Vanderbilt reached a season high in points, topping the 86-79 win over North Carolina State a week ago at the TicketCity Legends Classic in East Rutherford, N.J.
The Commodores shot 57.1 percent from the field and made 11 3-pointers.
Vanderbilt got 18 points from John Jenkins, who reached double figures for the 38th time in his career. Brad Tinsley and Jeffery Taylor added 16 points apiece.
Lance Goulbourne had 10 rebounds to go with seven points, and made a rally-killing bucket with 6:01 remaining. The shot snapped a drought of 6:06 without a made field goal, during which Monmouth whittled its deficit down to 11 points. After Goulbourne’s shot, the Commodores pulled away again during the waning minutes.
Jesse Steele scored 25 points for Monmouth (0-6), which has allowed 85 or more points four times this season and 90 or more on three occasions.
