Augustine Rubit scored 20 points and South Alabama rallied for a 79-75 overtime victory over Louisiana State on Wednesday.
Xavier Roberson added 19 points, as well as a huge offensive rebound at the end of regulation that led to Freddie Goldstein's game-tying jumper with one second left.
It is another embarrassing loss for Trent Johnson’s Tigers, who were expected to make strides this season after enduring consecutive 11-win campaigns. LSU (3-3) also lost to Coastal Carolina in the Charleston Classic Tournament last week.
Andre Stringer had 20 points and Ralston Turner added 13 for the Tigers, who had their two-game winning streak snapped despite leading for most of the game.
The Jaguars (2-2) trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, but closed on a 19-8 run, which was capped by Goldstein’s last-second jumper. LSU led 69-66 with 19 seconds left when Goldstein stepped to the line. He missed the second free throw, Roberson grabbed the offensive rebound and called timeout. Goldstein’s jumper with one second left tied it at 69.
The Jaguars then outscored the Tigers 10-6 in the extra session. Stringer’s free throws pulled LSU to within 75-73 with 1:50 left, but Augustine’s jumper with 24 seconds left gave South Alabama a 77-73 lead.
Goldstein then hit two game-clinching free throws after Justin Hamilton’s layup.
