Iowa State shot a blistering 77 percent from the field in the second half and used a 15-1 spurt to start the second half to knock off Western Carolina 92-60 on Sunday in the first round of the South Padre Island Invitational in Ames, Iowa.
Four players, including three transfers from Big Ten schools, paced Iowa State (2-1) who broke the game open after leading only 38-34 at halftime. Chris Babb, who transferred from Penn State, led the Cyclones with 18 points, including 5-5 from 3-point range. Babb also had six rebounds and a game-high six assists as Iowa State shot 65 percent from the field for the game, and hit 20 of 26 field goals in the second half. The Cyclones also shot 61 percent from 3-point range (11-18).
Royce White, a transfer from Minnesota, added 17 points and seven rebounds for Iowa State while Chris Allen, who transferred from Michigan State, chipped in with 13. Tyrus McGee came off the bench to score 12.
Western Carolina (2-2) was led by Harouna Mutombo's game-high 19 points.
