Freshman Kedren Johnson picked up the scoring slack for the injured John Jenkins, leading No. 20 Vanderbilt to an 80-68 win over visiting Bucknell Tuesday night.
Johnson tallied 11 of his 13 points in the second half, and the Commodores (2-1) bounced back from Sunday’s upset loss to Cleveland State.
Jenkins sat out with an ankle injury, which led Vandy coach Kevin Stallings to alter his lineup. Four freshmen all saw the floor at some point for the Commodores.
Vanderbilt shot poorly from 3-point range against Cleveland State and got off to a slow start against Bucknell by making only 2 of 15 shots beyond the arc in the first half. However, after leading just 27-26 at halftime, the Commodores made five of their first eight tries from long range after the break.
Brad Tinsley and Lance Goulbourne each added 12 points for Vandy, while Jeffery Taylor contributed 11 points.
Bucknell (0-2) held its last lead in the opening minute of the second half. Joe Willman scored a career-high 17 points for the Bison. Joshea Singleton added 12 points and Mike Muscala, Bucknell’s leading scorer and the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, scored 10.
