Kyle Fogg scored 21 points and No. 16 Arizona overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to record a 73-63 victory over visiting Ball State.
Solomon Hill added 16 points and 11 rebounds and hit a key 3-pointer during the decisive 11-0 run that enabled the Wildcats (3-0) to thwart the upset bid of the Cardinals (0-1).
Jarrod Jones had 25 points and nine rebounds for Ball State, which controlled play for the first 23 minutes of the contest before wilting.
Nick Johnson hit two free throws with 6:07 left to give Arizona a 56-55 advantage, the Wildcats’ first lead since 6-3 less than two minutes into the contest. Hill scored Arizona’s next five points, including a wide-open 3-pointer from the left baseline to give the Wildcats a 61-55 edge with 2:23 remaining.
The Cardinals went nearly six minutes without scoring until Jesse Berry’s three-point play with 1:07 left cut Arizona’s lead to 62-58.
The Wildcats were 31 of 43 from the free-throw line. Ball State made just 6 of 13 attempts.
Jauwan Scaife scored 14 points for the Cardinals.
Ball State led 38-29 at halftime after making seven 3-pointers, committing only one turnover and forcing 10 Arizona miscues.
