Tyler Zeller scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead North Carolina to a 91-75 win over UNC Asheville, spoiling the debut of the school’s new Kimmel Arena.
The Tar Heels (2-0) shot an impressive 59.3 percent from the field. Zeller, a 7-foot senior, made 8 of 13 shots and 11 of 13 free throws. John Henson scored 20 and had 12 assists and Harrison Barnes scored 17 for UNC.
UNC Asheville (0-2) trailed 48-39 at halftime and watched the Heels start the second half with a 13-3 run to break the game open. The Bulldogs placed four players in double figures: J.P. Primm with 23, Jaron Lane with 21, Matt Dickey with 14 and Chris Stephenson with 13.
Early season games against UNC Asheville and the season-opener against Michigan State in San Diego marked one of the longest two-day turnarounds in UNC history. In 1980 they played in the finals of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage and played at home two days later.
The game was a homecoming for UNC coach Roy Williams, who grew up in the Biltmore area south of Asheville and attended Roberson High before playing for the Tar Heels. North Carolina is now 8-0 against UNC Asheville.
