John Jenkins scored 24 points and surpassed 1,000 for his career, and a Vanderbilt team facing high expectations started the new season with a 78-64 victory over visiting Oregon on Friday.

The No. 7 Commodores, who hold their highest preseason ranking since 1965, took control of the game with a 16-0 run that bridged the halftime break. Turnovers loomed large for Oregon during that stretch as the Ducks coughed it up on six of their first seven possessions in the second half.

Jenkins got off to an 0-for-4 start from 3-point range, but finished 7-of-16 from beyond the arc.

Jeffery Taylor added 21 points and 11 rebounds, and continued a positive trend for the Commodores. Vanderbilt went 17-3 last season in games where Taylor scored 15 or more. Brad Tinsley added 13 points.

Tony Woods came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points for Oregon, which trailed by as many as 18 points but got within two possessions inside the five-minute mark of the second half before Vanderbilt pulled out of reach for good with 12 unanswered points.

Brett Kingma and E.J. Singler added 10 points apiece.
