Andrew Jones’ tip-in with one second left lifted Penn State to a 57-55 victory over No. 16 Illinois Tuesday.
Talor Battle scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half and Jones finished with 12 for the Nittany Lions (10-6, 3-2 Big Ten), who have knocked off ranked opponents in back-to-back games after taking down then-No. 19 Michigan State Saturday.
Penn State took control early, jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes and owning a 25-13 edge with six minutes left in the first half before the Fighting Illini found their footing, closing the period on a 12-0 run to knot it at 25-25 at the break.
Neither team was able to pull away in the second half as they traded the lead seven times before the Nittany Lions grabbed a 52-51 edge on Jones’ jumper with 5:27 left and stretched it to 55-51 when Battle drained a 3-pointer at the 4:44 mark.
Illinois (13-4, 3-1) tied it on Bill Cole’s layup with 22 seconds left and Penn State had one last chance in regulation. Battle drove for a layup and missed, but Jones was there to grab the offensive rebound and tip it back up for the game-winner.
