Trevor Gaskins scored 21 points off the bench to lead Mississippi to an 83-72 victory over Texas State Wednesday in the first round of the Cancun Governor’s Cup.
Gaskins had three 3-point baskets and three steals as Ole Miss (8-2) won its fifth straight game and advanced to Thursday’s semifinals of the eight-team tournament.
Eddie Rios and Cameron Johnson scored 16 points apiece for Texas State (2-8), which lost its seventh consecutive contest.
Chris Warren had 18 points for the Rebels despite a lackluster 3-for-13 shooting performance. However, Warren made all 12 of his free-throw attempts.
Reginald Buckner had 13 rebounds for Ole Miss, which had a 42-21 rebounding edge over the Bobcats.
Texas State’s Rios made five 3-pointers. Jonathan Sloan added 12 points for the Bobcats.
Terrance Henry scored 13 points and Zach Graham added 10 for the Rebels.
Ole Miss made 25-of-29 free throws, while Texas State was just 14-of-24.
