An explosive evening for Jimmer Fredette Saturday helped Brigham Young stay unbeaten.
Fredette’s 33 points and 10 rebounds helped the Cougars push past Arizona, 87-65, at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City. It was BYU’s 10th win of the season and could vault the Cougars into top-20 status pending the release of next week’s ESPN/USA TODAY poll. Currently, BYU (10-0) is ranked 21st overall.
Brigham Young jumped out of the gate with a 12-4 lead after 3 ½ minutes. Later in the half, after Arizona (8-2) cut the deficit to 14-10 with 14:58 to play, the Cougars went on a 14-0 run over six minutes and effectively killed the Wildcats’ chances. BYU led 44-25 at halftime.
The Cougars shot 29-of-58 (50 percent) from the field, including 11-of-22 from Fredette.
Kyle Collinsworth had 12 points and five rebounds, and Brandon Davies added 11 points.
Lamont Jones scored 20 points for Arizona, and Derrick Williams came away with 13 points and six boards.
