Talor Battle nailed a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left and finished with 13 points as Penn State (7-2) narrowly escaped Mount St. Mary’s, 57-53, on Tuesday.
Penn State led 31-22 at the half but the Mountaineers did not go away after the break, steadily chipping away until Tayvon Jackson’s layup with 10:44 remaining gave them a 38-37 lead. Neither team could get more than four points ahead, with Mount St. Mary’s tying it up when Lamar Trice drained a jumper to make it 53-53 with 27 seconds left.
But the Nittany Lions made their next possession count, working it around to Battle for the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds on the clock.
Trice finished with 16 for the Mountaineers (3-6), who have lost two straight by a total of six points and are in the midst of a stretch of seven of eight games on the road. Jeff Brooks added 12 points for the Nittany Lions.
