Ridge Graham scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Stetson to a stunning 89-79 season-opening win over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem Friday night.
Even with low expectations this season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the last thing Wake Forest first-year head coach Jeff Bzdelik needed was to get off to slow start in non-conference play. That is exactly what happened as Stetson, of the Atlantic Sun Conference, closed the first half with a 12-2 run to take a 36-33 halftime lead, and the Hatters never trailed in the second half.
Tyshawn Patterson added 20 points for Stetson (1-0), while Joel Naburgs chipped in with 16 as Stetson claimed the school’s first win over an ACC team since 1974.
Wake Forest (0-1), which has five freshmen on its roster, was led by frosh J.T. Terrell’s game-high 26 points, while Ari Stewart added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bzdelik became the first Wake Forest coach to lose his debut since Jack McCloskey in 1966.
