Brett Gardner hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning Sunday and the visiting New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Toronto's Tyler Clippard (4-3) hit Greg Bird with a pitch to open the 10th. Tyler Wade ran for Bird and was sacrificed to second by Austin Romine. Gardner singled left to score Wade.

Chad Green (5-1) pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth earn the win. David Robertson pitched the bottom of the 10th to earn his second save of the season. The Yankees' regular closer, Aroldis Chapman, was out with tendinitis in his knee.

Kendrys Morales hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays. It was the 200th of his career, making him the fifth Cuban-born player ever to reach that plateau.

Toronto starter Ryan Borucki allowed one run, seven hits and two walks over seven innings in his third major league start. The left-hander struck out five.

New York starter Domingo German allowed one run, four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings.

The Yankees scored a first-inning run on a single by Aaron Judge, a double by Giancarlo Stanton and a groundout by Miguel Andujar.

The Blue Jays had the bases loaded in the fourth on a single and two walks, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ended the threat by striking out.

Borucki coaxed double-play grounders in the fourth and fifth innings, each time after a walk.

Morales tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, clubbing a 3-2 fastball over the wall in right for his 10th homer of the season.

Adam Warren replaced German in the seventh inning, and Gurriel greeted him with a double. The potential rally fizzled on two strikeouts and a popout.

Seunghwan Oh replace Borucki for the eighth and pitched around a leadoff single and tossed a perfect ninth.

Morales singled against Warren with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Aledmys Diaz ran for Morales and was picked off.

Blue Jays first-base coach Tim Leiper was ejected in the eighth inning, and quality control coach Mike Mordecai took over for him.

Before the game the Blue Jays put right-handed reliever Rhiner Cruz on the disabled list with a strained right groin and recalled left-hander Tim Mayza from Triple-A Buffalo.
