BALTIMORE -- Jonathan Schoop saved the game for Baltimore with a ninth-inning defensive play. He then won it for the Orioles with his bat four innings later.

Schoop lined an RBI double against Aaron Loup in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Orioles a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at Camden Yards.

Manny Machado started the winning rally with a leadoff infield single that third baseman Josh Donaldson knocked down but couldn't make a play on.

Schoop lined the next pitch into the gap toward right-center field. Machado scored easily. The Baltimore second baseman now has 101 RBIs for the season.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going to go into the gap and I know Manny was going to get on his horse, trying to score," Schoop said. "In my mind, (I) was just (trying) to go to third, and if they throw him out ... at least I'm on third for the next guy to drive me in."

Schoop didn't have to worry about that as Machado had little trouble scoring from first.

The Orioles (69-66) now are 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild card after the Twins fell to Kansas City 7-6 on Friday. Baltimore also is 2 1/2 games behind the Yankees for the first wild card.

Jimmy Yacabonis (1-0) got his first major league victory after throwing a scoreless 13th, which ended when Trey Mancini made a leaping catch of a Steve Pearce line drive in left with a runner on second.

Loup (2-3) finished with one inning plus two batters.

The Jays had several scoring chances -- as did the Orioles -- but Toronto could not come up with the big play that was needed.

"It really was a great ballgame," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "Both teams played very well. Both teams pitched very well. There were some big plays on both sides. A lot of good things happened tonight except for the score."

Both teams nearly scored in the ninth. Toronto's Kevin Pillar was thrown out at home by Schoop on a grounder off Zach Britton on the edge of the infield grass. Schoop made a perfect throw home to catcher Caleb Joseph, who tagged out Pillar at the plate.

The Jays challenged the call, but it was upheld. The Orioles then put runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth but couldn't bring in the run.

Starters Kevin Gausman and Joe Biagini battled throughout the first six innings. Gausman blanked the Red Sox for 7 2/3 innings in his last start and threw six shutout innings in the one, scattering five hits and striking out eight with one walk.

Biagini had been 2-8 as a starter and allowed five hits in the first two-plus innings but shut down the Orioles after that.

He retired the next 15 Orioles (69-66), didn't allow a base runner after that, and had a career-high 10 strikeouts overall with just one walk through seven shutout innings.

"The challenge for me has been trying to find consistency," Biagini said. "I was happy with the way that I, at least, tried to be more aggressive."

The Baltimore bullpen blanked Toronto in the final seven innings to lock up the win.

"I knew about the third or fourth inning ... Biagini had four pitches going at any point in the count and it was a challenge," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "But our bullpen was as good as theirs tonight."

The Orioles wasted three good early scoring chances. They had runners on first and third with no outs in the first but came up empty -- and lost Adam Jones, who got tossed by home plate umpire Pat Hoberg for arguing after his strikeout.

They also had two on in the next two innings, but Biagini escaped trouble both times.

Toronto (62-73) put runners at third in the first and second innings, but the Blue Jays also could not score.

NOTES: CF Adam Jones, after his ejection, has been thrown out twice in his career, both times this year. ... Baltimore made several moves, including recalling OF Joey Rickard and INF Pedro Alvarez from Triple-A Norfolk as well as highly-touted C Chance Sisco. ... 1B Justin Smoak (calf) is still having a leg problem, according to Toronto manager John Gibbons, and will need another day to rest. Smoak pinch-hit in the seventh inning but didn't remain in the game. ... The Blue Jays also made a number of moves, including bringing back C Luke Maile from the DL and calling up OF Michael Saunders, an 2016 All-Star with Toronto, from Triple-A Buffalo.
