The Houston Astros pounded Matt Cain in the early innings and cruised to a 7-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday to take the three-game series.
Hunter Pence hit a three-run home run in the first inning to get things started and Jason Castro took him deep in the second for his first career homer. Lance Berkman added a two-run double for a 6-0 lead after two.
Michael Bourn completed the onslaught by doubling in Castro to knock Cain out in the third inning.
Cain (6-6), who entered the game fourth in the National League in ERA, gave up seven earned on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez (4-10) picked up the win with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, one walk and struck out three.
Closer Matt Lindstrom got into some trouble in the ninth, allowing the tying run reach base, but closed it out for this 17th save.
The Giants got to the Astros bullpen, including a two-run home run by Pat Burrell, but the damage was done.
