Cincinnati jumped out to an early lead and Travis Wood made it stand up as the Reds downed the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 on Saturday.
Joey Votto had two hits and an RBI and Jonny Gomes recorded two hits and an RBI double in the first inning. Wood smacked a solo homer, the first of his career, to help his own cause as all nine of Cincinnati’s starters chipped in with at least one hit.
Wood (5-2) turned in a solid effort, allowing just an unearned runs over seven innings. He struck out three and walked two in picking up his fifth win as a rookie.
Fellow rookie Aroldis Chapman came on in the eighth in his third appearance since getting called up last week. He gave up his first major league walk but got Albert Pujols to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Adam Wainwright (17-10) left after five innings and was only charged with two of Cincinnati’s five runs. He allowed seven hits while striking out six and walking one.
Matt Holliday had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who fell eight games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central.
