Jay Bruce broke a tie with an RBI double in the eighth inning before Drew Stubbs added an insurance run in the frame to give the Cincinnati Reds a 6-4 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night.
Joey Votto had three hits, including a home run, and Ryan Hanigan drove in a pair of runs for the Reds, who have taken six of seven from the Astros on the season.
With things tied in the eighth, Bruce brought home Votto with a double off Tim Byrdak, and later Stubbs lifted a sacrifice fly for the two-run advantage.
Logan Ondrusek (1-0) earned the win with one inning of hitless relief. Francisco Cordero allowed a pair of runners to reach base in the ninth but got Hunter Pence to fly out to center for the save.
After falling behind by a run, the Reds scored three in the fourth and grabbed a 4-2 edge on Votto’s solo blast in the fifth. Pence, who finished with four hits, responded with a two-run shot in the sixth to even things up.
